Empowering Communities through Fruit Tree Planting
Your donation will be utilised in two ways:
- Employment of full-time gardeners to maintain crops at our own agricultural centres. The harvested produce is then sold, and the profits contribute to our charitable projects.
- Donation of fruit trees to various communities, particularly women garden projects, enabling them to sustainably provide for their families.
In The Gambia, we plant a variety of fruit trees as part of our self-sustainability projects, supporting women’s gardens, schools and masjids. These trees provide an essential source of food and income for local communities while also benefiting the environment.
We categorize our fruit trees into two types:
1. Short-Term Trees
These trees grow quickly and begin producing fruit within a short period. Their smaller size allows them to be planted in various spaces, making them ideal for home gardens, schoolyards, and community plots. They provide a rapid source of nutrition and income for beneficiaries.
While their lifespan is typically up to 15 years, they offer multiple harvests per year, ensuring a steady supply of fruit.
Examples:
• Banana trees – First harvest in 9–12 months, continuous production
• Papaya trees – First harvest in 6–12 months, peak production in the first 2 years
2. Long-Term Trees
These saplings grow into large, fully developed trees, with life spans ranging from 30 years to over a century. While they take longer to bear fruit, they provide abundant harvests once established. They also play a vital role in soil conservation, erosion control, and providing shade for people and animals.
Due to their size and growth requirements, these trees are typically planted in larger open spaces.
Examples:
• Orange trees – First harvest in 3–5 years, lifespan 50+ years
• Coconut trees – First harvest in 5–7 years, lifespan 60–80 years
• Mango trees – First harvest in 3–6 years, lifespan 100+ years
Our project balances both types of trees to provide immediate and long-term benefits to Gambian communities. Short-term trees offer quick results and flexibility, while long-term trees contribute to sustainable food production and environmental improvement over decades.
At Sunnah Charity, we believe in the power of sustainable agriculture to transform lives and build self-sustaining communities. Our Fruit Tree Planting initiative aims to support local communities by providing them with fruit trees that not only serve as a source of nutritious food but also generate income and foster self-reliance.
