Understanding Qurbani

The act of sacrifice, known as Qurbani, is a crucial practice in Islam. It honours Prophet Ibrahim’s (AS) devotion to offering his son as a sacrifice in response to Allah’s command. We prepare to carry out this significant act of worship as the days of Dhul Hijjah and the celebrations of Eid al-Adha begin to approach.

Muslims around the world will perform their Qurbani during this time to honour this beloved tradition.

Fulfilling Your Obligation

You must understand how to carry out this responsibility correctly. By making a Qurbani donation through Sunnah Charity, you are directly helping those who are most in need with your sacrifice, so they can enjoy the meat from your donation, supplying them with sustenance and joy throughout Eid al-Adha and beyond.

The heart of your offering is a demonstration of your faith and commitment to Allah, as well as being a means of nourishment for the needy.

“Their meat will not reach Allah, nor will their blood, but what reaches Him is piety from you,”- The Noble Qur’an [22:37].

Extending Your Sacrifice

We encourage you to follow the Prophet’s tradition of offering an additional Qurbani on behalf of Muslims who are unable to do so, to honour this occasion genuinely. By extending your sacrifice, you support those in Yemen, Afghanistan, Syria, and other crisis-ridden areas, creating a significant impact on the Ummah.

Who Must Perform Qurbani?

The Hanafi school states that all Muslims who possess wealth above the value of Nisab are obliged to contribute to Qurbani. Providing a Qurbani is also mandatory if you can pay Zakat.

In the Maliki and Hanbali schools, the person in charge of the household can make Qurbani on their behalf. However, the safest course of action is for each Zakat-eligible person in a household to perform Qurbani.

Make Your Qurbani Count

Create long-lasting change with Sunnah charity through your sacrifice. We make sure that the true spirit of Qurbani is upheld by distributing your donation to those in need. As you prepare for Eid al-Adha, keep in mind that this is a time for deep spiritual reflection and giving. Come together to contribute to Sunnah Charity’s mission of uplifting communities all over the globe.

FAQs

Qurbani FAQs

Taking place at the end of Hajj during Eid al-Adha, Qurbani is an annual sacrifice made for the sake of Allah (swt). The practice pays tribute to Prophet Ibrahim (AS), who was prepared to offer his son Ismail (AS) as a sacrifice in compliance with Allah’s command. Instead, Allah provided a ram for sacrifice. Performing Qurbani each year is a symbol of Muslims’ willingness to surrender to Allah and make any sacrifices He requests of us.

On the 10th and 12th of Dhul-Hijah, Eid al-Adha, Qurbani is held following the Eid prayer. This year, the first day of Eid al-Adha is expected to fall on the 16th or 17th of June, 2024. We take any donations towards animal sacrifices up until the day of Eid, and then the sacrifices take place during the three days of Eid.

The Prophet (SAW) said on the day of Eid, ‘The first thing we will do on this day of ours is to offer the Eid prayer and then return to make the sacrifice. Whoever does so has acted according to our Sunnah’ (Bukhari).

According to the school of Hanafi, any sane adult Muslim who possesses the Nisab value must offer a Qurbani. If you are able to pay Zakat, you are also required to perform a Qurbani.

In the Maliki and Hanbali schools, the head of the household can offer a Qurbani on behalf of the entire family. As Ata bin Yasar reported, ‘A man would sacrifice a sheep for himself and the people in his household’ during the time of the Prophet (SAW) (Tirmidhi).

However, today it’s not uncommon for multiple people in a household to be Zakat payers. In such cases, it’s best and safest for each eligible person to offer their own Qurbani.

An individual who has missed performing Qurbani in a previous year can make up for it this year by sacrificing an additional animal. Calculate how many years have been missed and sacrifice the corresponding number of animals. We at Sunnah can then allocate the individual’s Qurbani accordingly.

Alternatively, you can compensate for missing Qurbani by offering the market value of one sheep or goat to the poor. This can be done through Muslim Hands.

The Prophet (SAW) offered a sacrifice on behalf of those in his Ummah who could not sacrifice and who bore witness to the Oneness of Allah and his Prophethood (Tabarani and Ahmad)

A single Qurbani can be a large animal, like a cow, a share in a larger animal, or a small animal, like a goat. Regardless of your choice, you are fulfilling your religious obligation in the same way, and none are deemed more fulfilling than the others.

You can also carry out an extra sacrifice on behalf of the Ummah in accordance with the Prophet’s (SAW) Sunnah. “The Prophet (SAW) sacrificed for those who could not sacrifice from his Ummah, those who bore witness to the Oneness of Allah and his Prophethood,” according to the narrations of Tabarani and Ahmad.

In addition to adhering to the Prophet’s Sunnah, doubling your Qurbani will boost your reward as well as help with distributing food for more families in need.

The majority of individuals like to give during Dhul Hijjah, although some choose to give their Qurbani up to one month before Eid. We advise making your donation as soon as you can since there is only a certain number of Qurbanis available at each location. During the three days of Eid, sacrifices will be made following the Eid prayer.

Sunnah Charity ensures that the meat from your Qurbani is distributed to the less needy during the three days of Eid al-Adha.

Sunnah Charity offers a variety of animals for Qurbani, depending on the location. We select large animals, which include cows, and small animals such as sheep and goats. Whether you offer a large animal or a small one, your sacrifice will fulfil your Qurbani obligation.

It is not mandatory to provide the names of individuals when performing Qurbani. However, if you would like to include names when donating your Qurbani, you are welcome to do so. Some donors who order multiple Qurbanis on behalf of friends and family choose to provide names to keep track of who has given. What matters most is the intention behind the offering.

Our ground teams come from the communities we support, making them the most knowledgeable about who is most in need. Before Eid al-Adha, they identify families in their local communities who will benefit the most from your sacrifice.

If you’re unsure which country to direct your Qurbani, consider selecting our ‘Where Most Needed’ option. Sunnah Charity will ensure your sacrifice reaches the people who need it most.

A Prophetic Qurbani refers to the sunnah of the Prophet (SAW) where he offered additional Qurbani, after fulfilling his personal obligation, on behalf of the Ummah who could not afford to do so. As narrated by Tabarani and Ahmad, the Prophet (SAW) sacrificed for those who bore witness to the Oneness of Allah and His Prophethood.

We encourage all of our donors to revive this forgotten Sunnah and support the most needy. Remember, Qurbani is a spiritual act and an opportunity to grow closer to Allah.
